Betting website crashes just prior to start of lucrative race
Betfair-owned American horse racing operation TVG were left red-faced after "botching" betting on the Kentucky Derby, one of the sports biggest betting days of the year, according to the New York Post.
TVG's online horse racing site crashed just before the annual race at Churchill Downs, only re-emerging online an hour and a half later.
The reason for the crash was described by TVG's chief executive officer Kip Levin as "human error". "We let many of you down, and we're sorry," he said.
According to Daily Racing Form, the failure resulted in a drop in wagers to $123.3 million from last year's $136.5 million.
"This year in particular, we took unprecedented measures to ensure a great experience for our customers," Levin said in a press statement. "Regretfully, due to human error, we introduced today's problem during a final readiness check. This won't happen again."
