Former nail salon owner Qui Nguyen (39) has taken down the WSOP 2016 Main Event for $8,005,310 and his first ever WSOP bracelet, emerging victorious on the other side of an 8-hour heads up match with Gordon Vayo that is being touted as a new 182-hand heads up duration record.
Nguyen, a relative unknown but an aggressive player, is said to prefer playing baccarat to poker, and eventually beat Vayo in after his opponent gambled all with his final 40 million chips.
Considered to be relatively inexperienced in terms of his competitors, Nguyen has only cashed once in the WSOP with his largest live tournament cash being $9,029, WSOP revealed.
Following his victory, Nguyen told ABC News: "I actually never played much heads-up, but I was very aggressive. Whether it was five-handed or two-handed, I was still [just as] aggressive."
"With millions of dollars [on the line], I didn't think a lot about winning and losing," Nguyen said. "I was just thinking in my mind 'don't make a misstep at all'. In a tournament, you can't make a misstep – if you make a misstep, you're done."
Final table results were:
1 Qui Nguyen $8,005,310
2 Gordon Vayo $4,661,228
3 Cliff Josephy $3,453,035
4 Michael Ruane $2,576,003
5 Vojtech Ruzicka $1,935,388
6 Kenny Hallaert $1,464,258
7 Griffin Benger $1,250,190
8 Jerry Wong $1,100,076
