The Powerball Lottery draw on Wednesday this week finally saw the jackpot of $768 million won, with one lucky ticket holder claiming the prize. The winning ticket was sold in the state of Wisconsin and matched all six winning numbers. The winning numbers were: 6, 20, 37, 44, 62 and the Powerball number is 12.
Only last Sunday we wrote about how the Powerball had not been hit for the last 25 drawings, going all the way back to Boxing Day last year. As a result of the large jackpot on offer, ticket sales had been strong prior to the draw on Wednesday, increasing the jackpot prize to a staggering $768.4 million with a cash option of $477 million.
The $768 million jackpot which was won on Wednesday night is the third largest lottery jackpot in history, but it falls someway behind the world record jackpot winnings of $1.586bn, which was shared with winners in Florida, California and Tennessee.
Commenting on the win, David Barden, Powerball Product Group chairman and New Mexico Lottery CEO said: “A jackpot of this size can make many dreams come true – not just for the winner, but for all Lottery beneficiaries and the lucky state of Wisconsin.”
Barden also added: “It’s going to be a very green spring for our first Powerball jackpot winner of 2019.”
Five other tickets also matched five of the winning numbers, but failed to also match the Powerball number.
