The NFL have suspended indefinitely the Arizona Cardinal’s cornerback Josh Shaw for betting on the outcome of NFL games, in the first instance the NFL have banned a player from playing for some 35 years.
The announcement which will see Shaw banned for at least the remainder of the season was made yesterday, with the NFL also confirming that no information has come to light that Shaw used insider knowledge or indeed compromised any of the games.
The NFL also confirmed that there has been no evidence that any teammates or coaches connected to the player were aware of his betting on games. Shaw, who has yet to appear for the Cardinals this season is not the first player to have been suspended by the NFL over betting on matches.
The most high profile instance occurred back in 1963, when the Green Bay Packers Paul Hornung alongside Alex Karras of the Detroit Lions, who were both banned for an entire season. Both were subsequently reinstated the following year.
According to the NFL, Shaw will be able to appeal his suspension on or after the 21st February next year.
