The number of people reliant on the nine casinos currently in operation within Atlantic City fell during 2019, compared to the previous year, with a total of 26,761 individuals being employed by the gambling sector at the end of the year. A decrease of 4.2% on the previous year’s figures.
Although industry experts see the slight fall in employment in the sector as of not being a cause for concern, with many of the view that the industry is correcting itself, after two casinos were opened in 2018.
Steve Callender, President of the Casino Association of New Jersey, speaking and commenting on the new employment figures, stated: “As we begin a new year, we look forward to maintaining this strong employee base, ensuring long-term economic growth and stability across the city.”
With Callender also referencing the opening of the new casinos in 2018, whereby their initial employment requirements, subsequently levelling off. Hence the fall on the previous year figures.
Furthermore, Bob McDevitt, President of the union representing some 10,000 casino employees, commenting on the fall in employment figures, said: “The 2019 figures bear out the fact that the industry has expanded by two, but it’s solid. These are good employment figures for nine casinos.”
With McDevitt’s comments backing up the assertion from Callender, that it is business as usual and the gambling industry in Atlantic City is healthy. During 2019, the gambling industry in the State of New Jersey, generated $3.3 billion. The highest level since 2012.
