But communication with players could be a lot better
Online gamblers have learned the hard way that when an operator suddenly stops or slows withdrawals and does not explain what is happening, it's usually the precursor to a shutdown that leaves them unpaid and out in the cold.
That may not be the case with daily fantasy sports operator FantasyHub, a Texas-based enterprise launched in 2014 which started slow-paying players earlier in the week without an explanation.
Things worsened on Friday when the site went dark but for a notification that it has temporarily suspended operations whilst "discussions with a strategic 3rd party regarding the future of FantasyHub and its players" take place.
Fortunately, players have access to communication with one another through forums like RotoGrinder, and a lively thread soon developed which appeared to spur FantasyHub into a further comment that management has taken legal advice and cannot comment.
However, the Fantasy Sports Trade Association perhaps threw further light on the situation in an interview with the publication ESPN, suggesting that money might be the problem by commenting that it hoped the operator would find a backer "to help them to meet their prize obligations."
FantasyHub players' fears of non-payment will have been exacerbated by allegations on the RotoGrinders forum that charities which FantasyHub claims to support in fact are not familiar with the operator.
