The Attorney General for the US State of Oklahoma has agreed to bring in a team of attorneys from a Michigan based law firm to represent the state in their ongoing negotiations with Oklahoma based Native American tribes over compacts that allow gambling.
It is believed that Attorney General Mike Hunter has agreed to outlay up to $250,000 to the Michigan law firm, in a move that he personally signed off last week with Ann Arbor-based law firm Dykema Gossett.
A spokesperson for Hunter said the hiring of Dykema Gossett was necessary, due to their experience in dealing with tribal negotiations.
Alex Gerszewski speaking on behalf of Hunter, said: “When dealing with issues as complex as compact negotiations, it is important to have experts with experience in this area.”
“Dykema has a proven record of success in tribal compact and gaming negotiations. We believe with their help, we can achieve a successful outcome for both the state and our tribal partners.”
Earlier this summer negotiations between Oklahoma and the tribes hit sticky ground after new State Governor Kevin Stitt indicated that he wanted to renegotiate the deals already in place. With a view to Oklahoma receiving more of the gambling revenue generated.
Currently the State receives between 4% and 10% of net casino revenue.
